Five minutes on worship...

Sometimes when I see the prompt for Five Minute Friday, I instantly get a picture of where I want to go. Sometimes my mind goes a little blank and in those cases I will admit to stalling when I get my timer ready. I've noticed that a lot of the posts have a Christian slant, which is fine with me. Mine do too, often. But I don't think that's in the rules, so I never force it. Then I saw today's post and two things happened. My mind went a little blank and I worried that this one would have to be really profound. The word is worship. How can you not have a Christian slant with a word like that??
Then I got out my phone and started to get the timer ready. But I saw that I had three text alerts I hadn't noticed earlier. Wonder what those are about? So I tapped over to them to see what they were. And then I had a sobering realization about worship that I wish I hadn't had. Because while that word should have a very Christian slant for me, the reality is that there are other things in my life that are much easier to worship.
Like that phone. Or my iPad. The games. The texts. The Internet. The blogs. The Internet. Yeah, I said it twice. Those things are often front and center for me. More often that they should be. Because there is another that is much more worthy and deserving of my worship. I need to remember to aim my worship in the correct direction. I need to give glory and honor to God instead of all these other things that grab my attention. So, Lisa Jo Baker? Thanks for that reminder this morning.

Very well said. I think that a lot of us spend more time worshipping things that 'don't really matter' at the end of the day. I know I do. It's always refreshing when I unplug for a bit. After the initial panic mode ;)
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love this. You could not be more spot on. I think so many of us spend our time on things that not only do not matter, actually can make our lives worse. Instead of connection with each other, we text or surf the web. Ugh. This was really thought provoking and different. Well done!! --Lisa
ReplyDeleteI agree about the slant - religious in general since I'm Jewish and I thought about going to temple as a kid. We don't go these days, but I do worship many of the things you worship!

ReplyDeleteThis is so honest. I love it. I am guilty of this too. I get distracted and I call it chasing a rabbit trail. Before I realize it, I'm so far away from where I need to be. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on worship!

Those things can be very distracting, can't they? And they are so present that they can make it hard to focus on the other things in our lives.
ReplyDeleteNice stuff, Rabia! I think, no matter what faith (or no faith) for that matter, we can all find ourselves in unintentional worship. Luckily, that can also be a wonderful thing! How many times have you been caught by surprise by Glory, when you were occupied with the mundane?
