Happy St. Patrick's Day

Today my classroom is in chaos! There is a pesky little Leprechaun flitting around the school. He dumped out the two and three year olds' toys and left sticky green footprints all over their rooms. He left piles of glitter on my tables and dumped out some of my toys too. The kids found a box in the class room and decided to make a Leprechaun trap. They colored the box green and decorated it with green items from the art cabinet. Then we set the trap. We put it in the cubbies because that is where it is quietest. The kids filled the "house" (we have to call it a house, or he might not come) with all the green toys they could find and then went off to their mats for nap time. They know that the Leprechaun won't even go looking for his new house if they are awake...or even if he thinks they are awake!

The cool thing about this scenario, is that the kids came up with the trap idea by themselves and they worked together to make it and set it. I tossed in the bit about having to go to sleep-they don't naturally go to sleep very well on their own. And they did all fall asleep!! I took out all their green toys and left them some gold coins (that look suspiciously like pennies) and some green pixi sticks. I also left them a note from the Leprechaun thanking them for the house, but telling them that he was headed back to Ireland.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Henry's 50 words-updated

I keep hearing this statistic that all kids should know 50 words by the time they are 2. Henry is getting close to that age and I am starting to worry that he is drastically behind! Granted he is a boy and the second child, both of which do not bode well for his language development, but still...I am a mother. I worry. Here is the list so far:
  1. mama
  2. dada
  3. NO
  4. MINE
  5. no (as is "nose")
  6. more
  7. nigh-nigh (as in "night night")
  8. bye-bye
  9. not nice (accompanied by a good finger shake)
  10. OW! (quite useful for an active toddler)
  11. ball
  12. kee-ka (for kitty)
  13. ogy (for doggy)
  14. *He says something for sissy/Frances but I can't really tell what it is or how to spell it

Updated on 3/15/09

  1. truh (for truck)
  2. eye (accompanied by much poking)
  3. ear
  4. shoe
  5. that (can be a question, as in "What's that?" or a statement as in "I want that."
  6. la lu (love you)
  7. Papa (much to his grandfather's delight)
  8. Abby (his cousin's name)
  9. baby
  10. book
  11. food
  12. moo

OK, I know I am forgetting some, so I will comeback to edit when I remember them. So far, this is a really sad list!

Frances' Heart

We got home late tonight because we took Ken dinner at work and decided to eat there with him. I got home and put Henry to bed and then put Frances in the bath. I had a conference call to make at 9, so we hurried her out of the tub. She wasn't going to make it into bed before the call started because I still had to comb her hair. I told her she could play on my computer while I was on the phone, but that when I said to go to bed, she had to say, "Yes Ma'am." and go straight to bed. I talked on the phone and combed her hair, she contentedly played computer games. I finished her hair and whispered, "Good night." She immediately said, "Yes Ma'am." and got up to go to bed. I glanced up and noticed that she had left the bedroom door wide open. Henry can't sleep that way, so I got up to go shut it and saw her standing next to his crib. I started to get after her about getting in bed when I looked a little closer and saw that her eyes were shut tight, her hands were folded in front of her and her little head was bowed down. I waited a minute and watched. She then crossed herself in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit and looked up at me. I asked her what she had been doing and she said she was praying for Henry that he would sleep good and have nice dreams. I am surprised that I made it all the way back to the couch without losing it. She loves that little boy with all her heart! She also loves God with all her heart, and if that doesn't warm your heart, then nothing will!

FIRST picture of something other than your kids!

This was the snow we had two weeks ago. It's the tree in our side yard. Kinda ironic to post it today since we were outside in shorts yesterday and probably will be again today. I thought it was going to be hard to find a picture of something other than my kids, but I went out early that morning to take some snow pictures before the kids got up.
